PCC Team Stepped in the Ring for ‘Step into Sport’ Experience

Members of the South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner team stepped into the ring recently to find out how a joint initiative project is boxing clever to help young people in Cardiff.

They strapped up their gloves and headed for The Hanger Human Performance Centre in Penarth Road where a group of young people were taking part in a boxing session.

Step into Sport is a collaboration partnership between Sport Cardiff, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner,  and works with young people to help with personal confidence and motivation through the vehicle of sport. Since the launch of the initiative in 2021, it has engaged with many young people, and earlier this year, another round of funding was agreed to continue the project for another 12 months.

Senior Policy Officer for Criminal Justice, Lisa morgan,  said: “The Step into Sport initiative has been a huge success and it was good for us to experience it for ourselves. The session led by Step into Sport co-ordinator Liam Mackay and boxing coach Paul Jenkins was tough but rewarding.

“Taking part in physical activities and sports improves physical and mental wellbeing - the programme provides positive experiences for young people and is boosting their personal confidence and motivation which will benefit them now and in the future,” she added.
