Independent Custody Visiting and Animal Welfare
The Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for volunteer visiting schemes which aim to provide reassurance to our communities about how the police go about their day to day work in South Wales in two key areas.
Independent Custody Visiting
The statutory Independent Custody Visiting scheme involves volunteers visiting police custody suites unannounced, at any time of the day or night to check on the treatment of detainees and the conditions in which they are held. With around 30,000 arrests leading to detention in police custody in South Wales in 2017-2018, the scheme provides a means of vital community oversight and helps to ensure a safe environment and deliver public reassurance
